Crucible essays

Crucible essays In literature as in life people often suffer severe tests of character. Sometimes they must defend their beliefs in the face of great opposition. In the drama The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, two characters showed this quality. John Proctor and Rebecca Nurse both suffered severe tests of character. In my opinion these characters are perfect examples of these type of people. Rebecca Nurse is a good example of a character that got tested. She sacrificed her life for her morals. When asked by Reverend Hale to she said wouldnt confess to witchcraft even to pardon her own life. Rebecca knew she would live if she confessed, but she wouldnt confess because she wouldnt tell a lie. She was a model person in this drama. Rebecca did such good deeds that people in other town had even heard of her. Thats why most people were shocked when they heard that she was put on trial for witchcraft. Rebecca was hung at the end of the drama for not confessing to witchcraft even though she was innocent. John Proctor is another good example of a character that got tested. He was not as that good of a person ,but he made up for it at the end of the drama. John had committed the crime of adultry during the play. He had cheated on his wife with Abby. He also did not go to church every Sunday. He was also accused of practicing witchcraft. Towards the end of the drama he was going to confess to say his life, but instead he chose the honorable thing to do and let them hang him. John Proctor did not want them to ruin his name. In my opintion he made many mistakes in his life, but he made up for all of them by dying life a hero. I think the Crucible showed how heroic some people can be even when faced with death and they defended there beliefs no matter what was going to happen to them. John Proctor and Rebecca Nurse were two great examples of these type of people. Both their characters were severely tested, and they...

The History of the Guillotine

The History of the Guillotine During the 1700s, executions in France were public events where entire towns gathered to watch. A common execution method for a poor criminal was quartering, where the prisoners limbs were tied to four oxen, then the animals were driven in four different directions ripping the person apart. Upper-class criminals could buy their way into a less painful death by hanging or beheading. The guillotine is an instrument for inflicting capital punishment by decapitation that came into common use in France after 1792 (during the French Revolution). In 1789, a French physician first suggested that all criminals should be executed by a â€Å"machine that beheads painlessly. Heritage Images / Getty Images Doctor Joseph Ignace Guillotin Doctor Joseph Ignace Guillotin was born in Saintes, France in 1738 and elected to the French National Assembly in 1789. He belonged to a small political reform movement that wanted to banish the death penalty completely. Guillotin argued for a painless and private capital punishment method equal for all the classes, as an interim step towards completely banning the death penalty. Beheading devices had already been used in Germany, Italy, Scotland, and Persia for aristocratic criminals. However, never had such a device been adopted on a large institutional scale. The French named the guillotine after Doctor Guillotin. The extra e at the end of the word was added by an unknown English poet who found guillotine easier to rhyme with. Doctor Guillotin together with German engineer and harpsichord maker Tobias Schmidt, built the prototype for an ideal guillotine machine. Schmidt suggested using a diagonal blade instead of a round blade. Leon Berger Noted improvements to the guillotine machine were made in 1870 by the assistant executioner and carpenter Leon Berger. Berger added a spring system, which stopped the mouton at the bottom of the groves. He added a lock/blocking device at the lunette and a new release mechanism for the blade. All guillotines built after 1870 were made according to Leon Bergers construction. The French Revolution began in 1789, the year of the famous storming of the Bastille. On July 14 of the same year, King Louis XVI of France was driven from the French throne and sent into exile. The new civilian assembly rewrote the penal code to say, Every person condemned to the death penalty shall have his head severed. All classes of people were now executed equally. The first guillotining took place on April 25, 1792, when Nicolas Jacques Pelletie was guillotined at Place de Grà ¨ve on the Right Bank. Ironically, Louis XVI had his own head chopped off on January 21, 1793. Thousands of people were publicly guillotined during the French Revolution. The Last Guillotine Execution On September 10, 1977, the last execution by guillotine took place in Marseilles, France, when the murderer Hamida Djandoubi was beheaded. Guillotine Facts Total weight of a guillotine is about 1278 lbsThe guillotine metal blade weighs about 88.2 lbsThe height of guillotine posts average about 14 feetThe falling blade has a rate of speed of about 21 feet/secondJust the actual beheading takes 2/100 of a secondThe time for the guillotine blade to fall down to where it stops takes 70th of a second Prunier's Experiment In a scientific effort to determine if any consciousness remained following decapitation by the guillotine, three French doctors attended the execution of Monsieur Theotime Prunier in 1879, having obtained his prior consent to be the subject of their experimentation. Immediately after the blade fell on the condemned man, the trio retrieved his head and attempted to elicit some sign of intelligent response by shouting in his face, sticking in pins, applying ammonia under his nose, silver nitrate, and candle flames to his eyeballs. In response, they could record only that M Pruniers face bore a look of astonishment.

It really helps question that you cannot escape past. Fact that and his father, however, is the important factor in exile later in history. When he discovers that King Laius was his real father, he sees that does not run away, he could have avoided this disaster as the whole. It just goes to show that hindsight is always 20/20; Oedipus saw this and realized his mistake. Understanding that he cannot go back and change your past is also the major theme of story. This fact too plays the big role in his mental collapse later in story. After he killed his father, he goes further down road when he, told him that if he cannot answer her riddle correctly, it wou ld kill him. Throughout story, Oedipus haste or lack of patience is most obvious. Wanting to put the end to mystery of Laius’s death as quickly as possible, Oedipus kill or deport those who have information. Teiresias tested Oedipus' patience in early history of information, which he held in his hand, you have experience! This forward accusing Tiresias was bad, especially as Tiresias predicted end of history. If Oedipus was more patient and waited, he would not have been so upset about future or whipped, which was happen. However, this is not just the feature take its supreme authority. Oedipus displays of anger throughout story, which did not help at all. L atest sign of that was worst enemy of any Oedipus was his own veracity. Whenever new facts are presented, Oedipus gave them the honest opinion. Once he was the suspect, who was involved Oedipus, he admitted, I think I am disgusting my own ignorant edict. Oedipus retained no evidence its future potential foreclosure and loss of his royal status. As history has risen to highest point, Oedipus preserved evidence of shepherd, that it was the terrible hearing, but it needs hear

The Malampaya Offshore Oil and Gas Field Assignment

The Malampaya Offshore Oil and Gas Field - Assignment Example The Philippine Government Department of Energy approved Shell Philippine Exploration (SPEX) to build a 500 kilometre undersea pipeline to transfer gas from the Malampaya-Camago fields to the main island of Luzon. Although the fields are in Chinese claimed waters, China did not object to the development (Pumphrey 237). Shell Philippine Exploration (SPEX) developed the Malampaya fields at an estimated cost of $4.5 billion U.S., â€Å"the largest single investment in the country† (Kreil 36) and the largest infrastructure project (McCallum 40). The Malampaya project is a joint venture of the Philippine government with the private firms Chevron Texaco and the Philippines Oil Company Exploration Corporation (PNOC-EC)† (Oxford Business Group 72). Structural interpretation of the 3D seismic data indicated the most prominent structural feature to be a SW-NE oriented fault, forming a crest at the western margin of the carbonate system. This fault was sealed by the Pagasa shales. à ¢â‚¬Å"Minor normal faults affect the Latee Eocene and Early Oligocene deposits in the North-Eastern termination of the carbonate system forming a short and narrow horst structure† (Fournier, Borgomano and Montaggioni 198). ... ubsurface Data Used to Describe the Malampaya Field â€Å"The dataset used in this study consists of a 3-dimensional seismic survey acquired by Shell Philippines (SPEX) in 2002, and well data from 10 wells (MA-1 to MA-10)† (Fournier et al 2005, 192). Core sections are available in wells MA-2, MA-3, MA-4, MA-5, MA-7, and MA-9. The seismic interpretation used prestack time migrated data (PSTM), with zero-phase signal. The seismic polarity is defined as negative amplitude means a downward increase in acoustic impedance, a positive reflection coefficient. The work uses the depositional facies and diagenetic features identified by Fournier et al, 2004 from MA-5 and MA-7, those obtained from thin section analyses on MA-6, MA-8, MA-9, and MA-10, and the re-examination of the rock material studied by Grotsch and Mercadier (1703) from MA-1, MA-2, and MA-3. Carbon and oxygen isotope analyses on whole-rock samples were used to support diagenetic interpretations. Deposition of the Reservo ir Section and Geometry of the Platform The evidence from the investigations by Shell Philippine Exploration (SPEX, 2009) verified the existence of an immense power source. Situated 80 kilometers northwest of Palawan island and located about 3,000 metres below sea level, â€Å"the Malampaya field had recoverable reserves of about 2.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves and 85 million barrels of condensate† (Oxford Business Group 72). A thin oil rim of 65 metres is overlain by a thick gas column of up to 650 metres; these are contained in a high relief carbonate reef build-up complex of the Nido Limestone Formation. It was determined that â€Å"28.5 MMscf/ day of gas and 7,500 bbl/day of 30 degrees APL oil† (Department of Energy, 2010) were released every day. The Late Eocene to Early Miocene

Abnormal Psychology History Essay

Abnormal psychology in clinical psychology studies the nature of psychopathology, its causes, and its treatments. Of course, the definition of what constitutes ‘abnormal’ has varied across time and across cultures. Individuals also vary in what they regard as  normal  or abnormal behavior. In general, abnormal psychology can be described as an area of psychology that studies people who are consistently unable to adapt and function effectively in a variety of conditions. The four main contributing factors to how well an individual is able to adapt include their genetic makeup, physical condition, learning and reasoning, and socialization. HistoryThe history of how abnormal psychology, began with the research of the famous ancient Greek philosopher Plato in the fourth century B. C. During his time most believed that the strange behaviors and actions that psychologists study today were caused by evil spirits. Plato believed this to be false and spoke his ideas of these behaviors being caused by a â€Å"natural madness, usually caused by a disease†. Unfortunately his words had no affect on the common people of his age. During the Dark Ages, the idea of the behaviors being caused by evil spirits escalated to the idea that people were being possessed by demons. Many people were exorcised by the churches or burned at the stake for possessing these â€Å"demons†. Over approximately one hundred thousand innocent people were killed for the same reasons by the Inquisition. It wasn’t until early 19th century that the idea of evil spirits and demons was tossed aside, and the idea of these behaviors being caused by illnesses in the mind was finally embraced. Modern concepts of abnormality * Statistical abnormality  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ when a certain behaviour/characteristic is relevant to a low percentage of the population. However, this does not necessarily mean that such individuals are suffering from mental illness (for example, statistical abnormalities such as extreme wealth/attractiveness) * Psychometric abnormality  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ when a certain behaviour/characteristic differs from the population’s normal dispersion e. g. having an IQ of 35 could be classified as abnormal, as the population average is 100. However, this does not specify a particular mental illness. * Deviant behaviour  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ this is not always a sign of mental illness, as it can occur without deviant behaviour, and such behaviour may occur in the absence of mental illness. * Combinations  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ including distress, dysfunction, distorted psychological processes, inappropriate responses in given situations and causing/risking harm to oneself. .[1]Approaches * Somatogenic  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ abnormality is seen as a result of biological disorders in the brain (Kraeplin, 1883). However, this approach has led to the development of radical biological treatments e. g. lobotomy. * Psychogenic  Ã¢â‚¬â€œ abnormality is caused by psychological problems. This has led to slightly bizarre treatments. Mesmer used to put his patients in a darkened room with music playing, then entered wearing a flamboyant outfit and pressed the ‘infected’ body areas with a stick. It has also led to the development of hypnosis, psychoanalysis (Freud) and carthasis as psychological treatments, as well as humanism (Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow).

Essay on Esthers Path to Fulfillment - 1927 Words

The picture of the perfect 1950s marriage as depicted through television sitcoms of that era display a happy family with a loving dutiful wife, a handsome businessman husband, and two or three children. What marriage then or now does this idealistic version truly portray? In the past few decades and especially in recent years that version of a marriage has greatly changed. The dynamic of how a marriage works has been significantly altered in the years since the 1950s. At that time the woman was expected to stay home, have babies, and care for the home while the husband was out in the work force. There is no typical American marriage anymore, every couple functions in a different way and is not expected to conform to any standards dictated†¦show more content†¦During the early 1950s women who had been working supporting the war effort were forced to leave their jobs and return to their lives as housewives. The times were changing once again and women were forced away from th e workforce which many enjoyed, and into housewifery in pursuit of a happy marriage. An article written about housewives during this period argues that the 1950s were an era in which women abandoned any professional aspirations and took on the job of being housewives (Pollard). In this article the young women preform all the tasks of a housewife that Esther would find menial and unfulfilling. Esther Greenberg is a complicated and intelligent girl who sees marriage as nothing more than a life of being a servant from the examples that she has witnessed. As the author states, â€Å"Hadn’t my own mother told me that as soon as she and my father left Reno on their honeymoon†¦ from that day on my mother never had a minute’s peace† (Plath, 85). Although Esther does not believe in putting aside her goals and ambitions for a man, society during the 1950s says that young women get married, have children, and abandon their own dreams.
